Our book this time was In a People House by Theo LeSeig, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss. This rhyming book is full of pictures and words that are familiar to young children (and some that may be new vocabulary!)

Our “Did You Know?” fact today was about Print Awareness:

Babies like books with pictures of familiar objects. As you read, try showing your child a real life example of something from the book. Instead of reading the story, today I told the story using the flannelboard. This was the first time I've tried the flannelboard with the toddlers and they were fascinated. One of the moms said it was like watching the crowd rush the stage at a concert.  :)

Our “Did You Know?” fact today was about vocabulary (new words).

Reading books to your child exposes her to more “rare words” – the juicy vocabulary that may not come up in everyday conversation with a child. When you encounter a big word, don’t feel like you should replace it. Let baby hear it and, once in a while, drop in an explanation.  “The enormous elephant…enormous means really big…went for a walk.”

Our book today was Ten Tiny Babies by Karen Katz. This counting book features babies going through familiar routines such as eating, bathing, and getting ready for bed. Lots of action words provide a chance to add some motion while reading.





Our “Did You Know?” fact for today was about Print Awareness.

As you read with your babies, they will try to turn the pages – let them! They are figuring out how books work. Things like knowing if a book is upside down and turning pages (in English, from right to left) are early steps toward print awareness and eventually reading.

Our book this time was Banana! by Ed Vere. This story has large, simple pictures and only two words: banana and please. The littles were more focused on this book than almost any of the others I've done, maybe because I was really hamming it up with different voices and facial expressions.




Our "Did You Know" fact for today was about singing.

Why sing? Singing slows down language, allowing children to build vocabulary and identify that language is made up of parts (sounds). Singing together has been shown to increase cooperation...try a "clean up" song or a "getting in the car seat" song. It's fun - and babies don't judge you!

Our "Did You Know" literacy fact for today was:

Grownups, when you say animal (and car, and...) sounds with your children, what your children are really learning are the sounds WE say in our language! This will help them become good readers because they’ll need to hear all those sounds in order to “take apart” words and sound them out when they read. Playing with your children will help them get ready to read!

Our book this time was Apple by Nikki McClure, which is a good example of a high contrast book. Especially for the first few months while their eyesight is developing, babies love looking at bold, contrasting colors and simple patterns. It's also great to use the simple text as a starting point for a conversation about what is happening in the pictures. An older child could tell you their version of the story.
