Preschool: Nursery Rhymes

This storytime was from the week of fall break at our schools. Since I never know what attendance will be like during breaks like this, I decided to wait before starting my next themed series on the alphabet. Nursery rhymes are always entertaining!

Gathering song: “If You’re Ready”
(to the tune: “If You’re Happy and You Know It”)

If you’re ready for a story, take a seat
If you’re ready for a story, take a seat
Clap your hands and stomp your feet
Make your hands all nice and neat
If you’re ready for a story, take a seat

Opening Song: “Clap and Sing Hello”
(to the tune: “Farmer in the Dell”)

We clap and sing hello
We clap and sing hello
With our friends at storytime
We clap and sing hello

(Repeat with wave and stomp.)

Introduction:
Evidence suggests that a familiarity with rhymes helps children to detect the phonetic components of words (i.e. rhyming syllables).

Anecdotal evidence suggests that kids who know several rhymes by heart become better readers. They also have a cultural component. Every culture has its own traditional rhymes. Share yours!

Finally, concepts and characters from nursery rhymes show up everywhere! Sharing nursery rhymes at a young age helps children recognize these characters when they show up later in a new rhyme or story.

Rhyme: “This Little Piggy” with nursery rhyme big book

This little piggy went to market
This little piggy stayed home
This little piggy ate roast beef
This little piggy had none
And this little piggy went "Wee, wee, wee" all the way home

Book: This Little Piggy’s Book of Manners by Kathryn Madeline Allen

Oh, the grand old Duke of York,                     (march)
He had ten thousand men;
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
And he marched them down again.

And when they were up, they were up,               (stretch up)
And when they were down, they were down,     (bend knees)
And when they were only half-way up,              (straighten up halfway)
They were neither up nor down.                          (stretch up...bend knees)

Rhyme cube: I roll the cube to select a fingerplay or action rhyme.

Book: Three Little Kittens by Jerry Pinkney

Flannelboard game: “Three Little Kittens”

My kitten has lost a lot of mittens! Each child gets one mitten of a colored pair. When I say, "My kitten has lost her blue mitten. Who has the blue mitten?" the child comes to the board to match up the pair.

Shaker song: “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

If you’re happy and you know it, shake your eggs
If you're happy and you know it, shake your eggs
If you’re happy and you know it and you really want to show it
If you’re happy and you know it shake your eggs

(Repeat and shake up high, shake down low, shout Hooray!)

Shaker song: Egg Shakers Up

Egg shakers up,                                            (shakers above head)
And egg shakers down,                                (shakers on the floor)
Egg shakers dancing all around the town.    (move shakers back and forth)
Dance them on your shoulders
Dance them on your head
Dance them on your knee
And tuck them into bed                               (fold shaker inside hands, under head)

Flannelboard rhyme: “To Market, To Market”

To market, to market to buy a fat pig
Home again, home again jiggety-jig

To market, to market to buy a fat hot
Home again, home again jiggety-jog

To market, to market to buy a plum cake
Home again, home again, market is late

To market, to market to buy a plum bun
Home again, home again, market is done

Book: To Market, To Market by Anne Miranda (big book)

Scarf song: “We Wave Our Scarves Together
(to the tune of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”)

We wave our scarves together
We wave our scarves together
We wave our scarves together
Because it’s fun to do!
Wave ‘em up high
Wave ‘em down low
Wave ‘em in the middle
Because it’s fun to do!

We throw our scarves together
We throw our scarves together
We throw our scarves together
Because it’s fun to do!
We throw ‘em up high
We throw ‘em down low
We throw ‘em in the middle
Because it’s fun to do!

Scarf song: “Popcorn Kernels

Popcorn kernels, popcorn kernels              (wave scarf)
In the pot, in the pot                                   (hide scarf inside cupped hands)
Shake them, shake them, shake them        (shake cupped hands)
Shake them, shake them, shake them
Til they pop! Til they pop!                        (throw scarf into the air)

Closing Song: “Tickle the Clouds

Tickle the clouds
Tickle your toes
Turn around
Tickle your nose
Reach down low
Reach up high
The stories are over,
Wave goodbye
