Preschool Storytime: Snow!

This theme was originally planned for last week, but that storytime was cancelled due to snow. Go figure. Fast forward seven days and we are returning from a weekend with temperatures near 70 degrees. No worries, though, it may snow again later this week.

For future reference: if MCCSC schools are closed for weather, there will be no storytime. We will still meet if there is a two-hour delay.

Opening song: “If You’re Ready”
(to the tune of: “If You’re Happy and You Know It”)

If you’re ready for a story, take a seat
If you’re ready for a story, take a seat
Clap your hands and stomp your feet
Make your hands all nice and neat
If you’re ready for a story, take a seat.

Book: Hare & Bear: Snow! by Emily Gravett

Flannelboard Rhyme: “Five Little Snowflakes”

One little snowflake with nothing to do
Along came another and then there were two
Two little snowflakes laughing with me
Along came another and then there were three
Three little snowflakes looking for some more
Along came another and then there were four
Four little snowflakes floating in the sky *
Along came another and then there were five
Five little snowflakes, having so much fun
Out came the sun and then there were none!

(*changed slightly from the original)

Action Rhyme: "Snowflake, Snowflake Twirl Around"

Snowflake, snowflake twirl around
Snowflake, snowflake, touch the ground
Snowflake, snowflake, touch my nose
Snowflake, snowflake, touch my toes
Touch my ear and then my knees
Snowflake, I'm about to freeze!
Snowflake, snowflake, twirl around
Snowflake, snowflake, sit back down

Book: All You Need for a Snowman by Alice Schertle

Flannelboard Game: “Mr. Snowman” *
(To the tune of “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes”)

Mr. Snowman needs a hat, needs a hat
Mr. Snowman needs a hat, needs a hat
Mr. Snowman needs a hat
Mr. Snowman needs a hat, needs a hat.

(Repeat with eyes, nose, mouth, scarf, buttons, arms, broom)

(*changed slightly from the original)

Since it was a small group today, the kids helped me by coming up to the board to add pieces to the snowman. Also, there really are two arms...somewhere.

Flannelboard/Puppet Rhyme: “The Snowman and the Bunny”

I built a little snowman
With a carrot for a nose
Along came a bunny
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny
Looking for his lunch
Ate the snowman’s carrot nose
Nibble nibble crunch!

Song with Scarves: “We Wave Our Scarves Together
(to the tune of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”)

We wave our scarves together
We wave our scarves together
We wave our scarves together
Because it’s fun to do!
Wave ‘em up high
Wave ‘em down low
Wave ‘em in the middle
Because it’s fun to do!

We throw our scarves together
We throw our scarves together
We throw our scarves together
Because it’s fun to do!
We throw ‘em up high
We throw ‘em down low
We throw ‘em in the middle
Because it’s fun to do!

Song with Scarves: “Popcorn Kernels
(to the tune of “Frere Jacques”)

Popcorn kernels, popcorn kernels              (wave scarf)
In the pot, in the pot                                     (hide scarf inside cupped hands)
Shake them, shake them, shake them        (shake cupped hands)
Shake them, shake them, shake them
Til they pop! Til they pop!                            (throw scarf into the air)

Book: Snowballs by Lois Ehlert

Action Song: “I’m a Little Snowman
(to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")

I’m a little snowman, short and fat             (hold arms out from sides)
Here are my buttons, here is my hat          (touch shirtfront and pull down hat)
When the sun comes out, I cannot stay      (circle arms overhead)
Slowly I just melt away.                                (wave arms down from head)

Flannelboard Rhyme: “Five Little Snowmen Riding on a Sled”
(to the tune of "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed")

Five little snowmen riding on the sled
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said,
“No more snowmen riding on that sled!”

(Repeat, counting down)

Flannelboard Rhyme: “Five Little Snowmen”

Five little snowmen made of snow
Five little snowmen in a row
Out came the sun and it shone all day       (add sun)
And one little snowman
Melted away                                               (replace with puddle)

(Repeat, counting down.)

Shakers: “Shake Your Shaker"
(to the tune of “Old MacDonald”)

Shake your shaker in the air, shake it in the air.
With a shake-shake here and shake-shake there,
Here a shake, there a shake, everywhere a shake-shake.
Shake your shaker in the air, shake it in the air.

Shake your shaker way down low, shake it way down low.
With a shake-shake here and a shake-shake there,
Here a shake, there a shake, everywhere a shake-shake.
Shake your shaker way down low, shake it way down low.

Shake your shaker way up high, shake it way up high.
With a shake-shake here and a shake-shake there,
Here a shake, there a shake, everywhere a shake-shake.
Shake your shaker way up high, shake it way up high.

Shaker song: “Egg Shakers Up
Egg shakers up,
And egg shakers down,
Egg shakers dancing all around the town.
Dance them on your shoulders
Dance them on your head
Dance them on your knee
And tuck them into bed                   (fold egg inside hands, under head)
