Introduction: Together we brainstormed things that are red. Some of the answers I got included apples, watermelon, fire trucks, and stop signs. Visual cues in the room helped the kids with this.

This traditional tale is perfect for oral storytelling. I used flannelboard figures as a visual aid.
Scarf Song: “One Bright Scarf”

Craft, Manipulatives, Exploration:
I put out a large basket and asked the kids to find all the red toys they could. They enjoyed finding red blocks, toy food, and stuffed animals. I thought they would then play with the red toys, but everyone was more interested in painting.
Painting
We used a variety of different art supplies (paint, halved apples for stamping, paint brushes, markers, crayons, and dot painters) to make open-ended creations in red.
This lovely book has only one word per page. I put out three copies and invited the adults to have their child use the pictures to tell the story.
